Teaching Programme for Young Learners

Vienna Pipes & Drums Are offering a free teaching program for young girls and boys who want to learn the bagpipes or drums.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take to learn to play the Scottish bagpipe or drum?

The bagpipes are difficult to learn. It takes a long time and lots of practice but, with some work, you could be playing them in one or two years! Learners start on the “practice chanter”, which is like a recorder. Pipers use this to learn the basic technique and their first tunes before moving on to the pipes. Scottish drumming is a little faster to learn.

How much will it cost? What do I bring?

The lessons are FREE. If you decide you like it, you pay a yearly fee of €150 for membership of the band. You don’t need to buy or bring anything at the start. We will provide practice chanters and materials. You also don’t need bagpipes or a drum — that comes later, after you have learned some tunes.

Where? When?

The learner group takes place on Wednesdays from 17:00-18:00 at the Pfarrsaal der Pfarre St. Florian, Wiedner Hauptstraße 97, 1050, Vienna.

Can anyone learn?

We have a small number of places for girls and boys between the age of 8 and 14. You don’t need special musical talent or experience, our doors are open to anyone who wants to give the bagpipes a try. The lessons will be in German and English, so learning a bit of English is an extra bonus! If you are older than 14 and still want to learn, contact us and we will try to help you out.

How do I register?

Simply send an email with your contact details and age to learn@viennapipes.com. Alternatively you can reach us through our Contact Form.

Why piping?

Piping is a great way to make new friends, learn a life-long skill, have fun, and travel the world!

And last but not least

Please do not buy a set of bagpipes until told to do so by your tutor. There are many cheap fakes on the market which will never play well.
